NFL DRAFT / NHL Playoffs

Ive had a prolonged absence from blogging but am going to attempt to make a return with some of the same stuff I had posted on previously as well as some more sporting information as the NFL draft has kicked off the NFL season in my opinion and I am personally in the midst of a very entertaining fantasy baseball season so I am firing on pretty close to all cylinders!

First off the NFL draft, some surprises, some great picks some poor ones. Ill hit on a few of each, no in depth coverage of the Draft for me, Im not Mel Kiper Jr, I dont have the hair for it.

Detroit Lions - Detroit did the smartest thing they could do which is trade out of their pick, unfortunatley Matt Millen still got to draft someone in the first round which is like putting a machine gun in the hands of a baby. He did address a position of need, but in taking Gosder Cherillus who is a fine tackle from Boston College they reached, as Jeff Otah the road grader from Pitt was still on the board, much more valuable as he could play G or T in the NFL. Second round pick was terrible, the LB from Colorado Jordon Dizon, nothing like drafting under sized slow middle linebackers that exist on intangibles in college, lord knows that will carry over to the NFL. Good picks, Kevin Smith, RB from UCF was a very good pick at the top of the third, has the potential to start right away and be an impact player and drafting Caleb Campbell from Army in the 7th round is a good PR move as well as a good player in the final rounds, he could end up playing OLB and be a better player than Dizon in my honest opinion.

Chicago Bears - 1st round draft pick made no sense to me, Chris Williams LT from Vanderbilt. What the Bears needed was Rashard Mendenhall a local kid who played at Illinois and wouldve unseated Cedric Benson at RB. Now they have Forte from Tulane who could take the starting job. Chris Williams isnt a bad player but is a bad fit for the Bears north south running system, he benched 225 21 times at the combine which is terrible for an Olineman. He wouldve been a better fit with a team like the Broncos who emphasize speed and quickness over brawn. Otah is much more of a Chicago style lineman.

Carolina Panthers - Great first round for the Panthers, getting Jonathan Stewart from Oregon in the 1st will give them the every down impact back they have been looking for and pairing him with the afformentioned Otah will only help out both players. Also drafting Dan Connors of Penn State in the third round was a very good pick with the loss of Dan Morgan to massive head trauma over his career.

New York Jets - Not only did Darren McFadden not sliding to 6 let the Jets take Vernon Gholston who should be an instant impact player at OLB in the Jets system and more than likely a double digit sack guy, but it keeps Thomas Jones as a viable fantasy RB option for me! Good things should happen for the Jets with the additions of Calvin Pace, Vernon Gholston and the much improved offensive line.

Kansas City Chiefs - Clearly in full out rebuilding mode at this point and their draft should help expedite the process. Glen Dorsey could be the best player to come out of the draft, DT's are notoriously hard to project but Dorsey has all the tools one looks for in a top level DT, also the ability to play the 1 technique or the 3 technique. Branden Albert should be an instant starter on the Chiefs offensive line which will help Larry Johnson have a better year and Flowers from Virginia Tech is a solid technical player who should have a fairly smooth curve in adjusting to the NFL. The only area KC should have tried to address but didnt was QB, Im an Alabama fan and I will tell you flat our that Brodie Croyle is not the answer at QB.

Some fun things for me from the draft. Mike Hart the little engine that couldnt shut up falling to the 6th was funny for me. However it puts him in a good situation, good system and on a good team. Three Cheers for Adrian Arrington for declaring for the draft early, that one really worked out for you. Kellen Davis from MSU also saw his draft stock plummet and no name TE's rise above him on teams draft boards, I think he has amazing talent but there are character concerns as well as the fact he was a one year wonder much like his teammate Devin Thomas who dropped from a projected 11 on many mock drafts to 34 to Buffalo.

On an NHL note, its nice to see two old school teams playing each other in the playoffs in the Montreal Philadelphia series. Although anyone who watches that series on any channel other than CBC is a moron as a CBC is the only real way to watch hockey. The day another network can come up with someone as awesome as Don Cherry to their broadcast I might be inclined to watch them. Just for fun, heres a clip some good old fashioned Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche acrimony all from 1997 with the two teams meeting again in this years playoffs.

Also, check out a friend of mines new blog Tobacco Juice Sports, I know no one cossmes to this site, but if you do on accident at least check his out as well.
