What is Privacy?

"Privacy, I would offer, is a system of laws, rules, and customs with an infrastructure of Inspectors General, oversight committees, and privacy boards on which our intelligence community commitment is based and measured."

-Donald Kerr, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence(LINK)

I don't know about you but that's not what I would consider privacy. Privacy means to me that people wont be snooping through my phone records, emails and internet activity. I understand that all of my activity on the internet is recorded and is done so by my ISP and the internet sites which I wish to use. Saying that I am therefore willing to sacrifice that bit of privacy for the services or enjoyment which can be derived. Donald Kerr would have you believe that simply because you have given that information to your ISP that you should be willing to fork it over to the Fed's. In his speech he also went on to cite that you are "perfectly willing for a green-card holder at an I.S.P. who may or may have not have been an illegal entrant to the United States to handle their data." I would much rather do that as the overwhelming majority of web based buisness and ISP's are bound by strict confidentiallity agreements where as the government is only confidential in that it will not reveal what information it illegal obtained about you.

Heres another Gem from Donald Kerr

"Privacy no longer can mean anonymity, says Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence. Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguard people's private communications and financial information..."

You have to love a government that believes privacy means your "security" from the false boogy man threats of "The War on Terror". Trust us though, we are the government, everything we are doing is for your own good and we are making sure that no data goes missing (like the laptops that you consistently hear that the FBI or some other branch of government has lost) . Some people(idiots) may have no problem with something like this as they will say "I have nothing to hide, go ahead and look" but as I have said before "I have nothing to hide so stay out of my business."

Oh and more thing, hes the definition of privacy so you can compare it with Mr. Kerr's idea

Privacy - The state of being free from intrusion or disturbance in one's private life or affairs.
